The United States has been shaken by a series of senseless mass shootings in the past month, the most recent of which has taken place in the city of Dayton, Ohio. In the most recent shooting, the suspect has been named as 24-year-old Connor Betts.

Betts killed nine people after opening fire in a neighborhood filled with bars. Police say that the killer was armed with a .223-caliber rifle, and magazines that were capable of holding at least 100 rounds of ammunition.

During a press conference on Sunday afternoon, Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl, released surveillance video footage, showing the moments that the shooting took place.

The footage shows police and emergency crews rushing into action as bystanders flee the scene.

During the news conference, Biehl said that the gunman was neutralized within a matter of 30 seconds after the first few dozen rounds were fired. The 24-year-old shooter was shot and killed by six police officers shortly after the chaos began.

Biehl says that luckily the officers were able to stop the shooter before he entered Ned Peppers Bar

“Had this individual made it through the doorway of Ned Peppers, there would have been catastrophic injury and loss of life,” Biehl told reporters.

However, much of the quick response was a matter of luck. It just so happened that there were a large number of police already patrolling in the area, so they were able to respond to the scene quickly and take the shooter out before he was able to hurt more people.

The motives for the shooting are not entirely clear, however, the shooter’s 22-year-old sister, Megan, was among the dead. This relation could give some insight into what was going through the mind of the killer in his final moments.

However, Biehl said that any attempt to suggest a motive so early in the investigation would be “irresponsible,” of the department, since not enough information is known. It is still unclear whether or not the shooter’s intended target was actually his sister, or if it was just a strange coincidence that she was caught in the crossfire. Still, there are some people who believe that the killer intentionally shot his sister because she was dating a black man.

It is important to note that these claims have not been verified by police.

A disturbing picture of the killer has emerged in the days since the shooting. Some reports have suggested that former classmates said that he was suspended from high school for compiling a hit list of those he wanted to kill and a “rape list” of girls he wanted to sexually assault. However, these reports are also still unconfirmed.

The gunman purchased the firearm legally not long before carrying out the act, according to police.

Two of the shootings to occur this week were clearly tied white supremacy, which is why there is so much speculation about that being a possible motive in this case, especially when considering the claims that he was angry with his sister for dating a black man. Police have said since there were an equal number of people from different races in the area, they don’t believe race to be a motive at this point.

Horowitz loved journalism, but wanted more freedom to pursue more complex topics than you would find on the evening news. Around the same time, he began to notice that there was a growing number of independent journalists developing followings online by sharing their in-depth analysis of advanced or off-beat topics. It wasn't long before Horowitz quit his internship with a large New York network to begin publishing his own material online.
